Dear Lea,

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful trip we had. Your country is a fascinating place. I didn't realize how little I knew about China until I saw first hand the enormous variety and the long, rich history and culture. The contrast between the new and the old is awesome.

Two things stand out. First, I appreciate the effort that is being made to expose visitors to your rich culture through the arts. We saw wonderful performances that displayed the beauty of the Chinese people, their talent, their cultural history, in spectacular costumes and stage settings. Secondly, I was particularly enchanted to see that almost all the plants we grow in SC originally came from China - camellia, azalea, nandina, pittisporum, yew, just to name a few. I am very impressed with the beautification that is happening along your highways and in your cities. The visitors for the 2008 Olympics will be treated with a visual feast.

My primary reason for writing is to tell you how much we enjoyed Peihong and David. They were an essential part of the success of our trip. Peihong was a warm, lovely presence who demonstrated her concern for our safety and satisfaction every day. She smoothed things out inconspicuously and graciously. I'm sure at times she thought we were a thoughtless, selfish, spoiled group, (and we were) but she never indicated that in any way. You are lucky to have such a special sister. She was a delight.

In addition, David became our "pet." He is a fine, young man and I know you are proud of him. You've done a marvelous job as a single mother in a strange country rearing a young man who is thoughtful, polite, unassuming, and very intelligent. I can see the man he will soon become and he is very special.

I respect your accomplishment because I was a single, working mother too, but at least I was in familiar surroundings and had my family for support. My son is now 34, a well educated lawyer, happily married, and I have a 9 month old granddaughter. He is my heart and I know you must feel the same about David. Thank you again for sending both him and Lia Piao with us. We would have been lost without their gentle, conscientious assistance.

We've all agreed to get together in the fall to share pictures and memories. I hope you will be able to join us so we can express our appreciation for the "trip of a lifetime" in person. I would also like to offer my assistance as you continue your personal campaign to inform Americans about your impressive country. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Elaine Camp
